If you are intending to rent a car then make sure you have your driving license with you before you start planning. You should be able to drive with your national license in most, but not all countries, for up to three months. Do some research before you leave and make sure that you don`t need to get an International driving permit. Some countries do require it, so do your research before you leave home.

Driving abroad has various hazards - the wrong side of the road, camels, the odd ox or two. Not to mention the drivers. But one of the biggest risks involved is with the insurance. The price of the cars displayed on the board will not be what they ask for. A deposit will always be asked for to cover damage and often an extra insurance premium will be added on. This is normally taken off a credit card and if there are no problems then the deposit money will not be kept. Make sure you have adequate funds to cover this as it can be quite expensive. Check with your own insurance policy as you are probably covered, but make sure you take a copy with you as proof.
Using an internationally recognized car rental company is always a wise move and this means you can reserve your car and sort all finances before you travel and can even collect the car at the airport on arrival. If you decide to rent your car in the hotel or resort you are staying in, speak with your tour rep or concierge at the hotel as they will have a list of recognized companies you can select from or even a specific car rental company located right on property.

Use of seat belts is usually mandatory in many countries and many have more stringent rules on speeding and drink driving than the UK, for example. If in doubt, simply don`t drink at all if driving. Possession of a radar detector is illegal in many countries, even if it's switched off, so if you have one, leave it at home and switch off the speed camera function on your sat-nav. Not all cars (especially outside the U.S.) are as well maintained as those offered by British car rental companies so if you intend to rent, have a good look around the car you're taking and make sure it seems roadworthy.
Remember that speed regulations abroad differ so familiarize yourself with the requirements of that country before you leave home. A bit of time spent on the internet will help you better understand the laws of the country before you start driving. Get yourself a good map of the area you are touring and plan which route you want to take beforehand, or even better, get a GPS before you travel which are available for use in many countries.
